TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and
70's!! I am one of the "Baby-Boomers" that is living proof of survival :)
************************************************** *

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank
while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a
can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby
cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or
cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the
risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car
seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special
treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a
bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and
NoONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank
Kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because, WE WERE ALWAYS
OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we
were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps
and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After
running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games
at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound
or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computer! s, no Internet or chat
rooms........

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and
there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not
live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with
sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not
put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked
on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who
didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law
was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers,
problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new
ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

oh don't misunderstand me...i have absolutely nothing against video games...but ya gotta admit that the addiction exists and that many of today's kids wouldn't know what to do without em...and i do think that tv and games alike don't do anything to promote the imagination, because they do all the work

true enough, though I'm constantly thinking about what would happen if the plot had taken a different route. And video games can be very conducive to learning, believe it or not, as they require a fair amount of strategy... I would strongly appreciate them being established in school instead of sports.

I really like this article... (http://eldibs.5gbfree.com/articleview.php?Title=Sports%20are%20not%20necessa ry.)

incidentally, MAVAV, the site, is a parody, when I say I hate MAVAV, I mean the idiot soccer moms who think video games are responsible for everything they are against.

sorry raven, but i gotta disagree with ya about the sports...they do teach a great many lessons not learned in the classroom...i freely admit that there's entirely too much attention given to it, true, but the things you actually learn are priceless along with the memories....yeah, i can see where video games can be educational in one dimension, but i still say it kills imagination by doing all the work...you still have to come up with strategy, but it's not the same as competing live with another human brain...

We on't have sports in school over here. I mean, we have gym classes, but if you wanna join a sports team, it's outside school.

I think sports in school is very important. It's good for everyone. It increases testosterone in men, improves hand/eye coordination, introduces a (somewhat) friendly competitive environment (if everyone's on a different team every day that is), and gets kids off their asses so their glutes don't atrophy. :D

but see, there's no physicality to gaming...and because of that, gaming lacks something in the camaraderie (sp) that you build...with multiplayer, you're annonymous, which is totally different...look, i'm not saying that gaming is an inneffective teaching tool, i'm saying that sports have their place...

WhiteRaven

you aren't necessarily anonymous in multiplayer, and I don't need someone sitting right beside me to understand how much better they are then a computer opponent, but anyway, sports don't belong in school, not outside of gym class anyway, in fact if afterschool activities in general were all removed, that would be great. When did school become a baby-sitting service, exactly? Although, like Eldibs said in that article, we don't even necessarily have to remove them, just make kids get decent grades to participate in them.

i definitely agree with that...any extracurricular activity should be based on academic performance, not athletic skill...

Of course, but it doesn't necessery have to be in school. Sports team team works just as fine outside school as in it.

I think it should be part of school. Perhaps on a credit system like college, you can take the standard Phys-Ed class in school or you can go to your local Karate or fencing club and have them send a letter to your school or something.

School is a place where kids are given what they need to grow up. This includes education but it also includes basic physical activity.

The problem with it not being officially institutionalized is that many wouldn't make their kids do sports. By putting it in school it is made available to everyone.

Similarly I think it should be required that road tests are given in manual transmission vehicles. Because of the necessity, courses which teach manual would be more readily available. People too stupid to drive manuals probably shouldn't be on the road in any kind of vehicle. And finally, if I wanted to borrow someone's car, or if I had a hot girlfriend with a '67 Shelby who let me drive on dates like it's supposed to be, I'd be able to do so. :D

"School is a place where kids are given what they need to grow up. This includes education but it also includes basic physical activity."

basic physical activity does not equal having ridiculously oversized muscles, or a cracked skull, and in today's world intelligence is more important than strength, not to mention intelligence will always win out over brute force anyway.

I drive an automatic, but I can still drive a manual. And I've never been taught how, it's really not that hard, I learned it by... um, driving one...

Tell that to the bookworm that gets his ass kicked in school because he lacks the physical ability to fight back. Guess what intelligence will do for him? He will either learn the easiest way to run away or bring a gun to school.

This mentality is why you have assholes like Dylan Klebold, Eric Harris, and Cho Seung-Hui. These are real bookworms with index fingers an inch longer than their ring fingers. They snapped because they always got picked on and never got laid because they had no testosterone coursing through their veins. They were as much victims of themselves as everyone else was.

What about all the spineless hippies that never feel safe unless the police force is an army? These weak, pathetic lowlifes are perfectly able-bodied yet choose not to be able to defend themselves. As a result everyone cries out for "more safety" and I have to be exposed to the inconveniences attending it.

This is why people feel the need to pick on the weaklings - they instinctively know, as do we all, that if people choose to be weak they will be dead weight to society. Some people are legitimately weak and that's understandable. I feel it's the duty of the strong to shepherd the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike- er, getting carried away... well you know what I mean. :D

i'm gonna interject somethin here, gen...the biggest reason we have such a problem with bullying, is that we've started teaching our kids that instead of standing up for ourselves, we're to go tell the nearest adult that we're being picked on...in most cases, the adult does nothing anyway, but instead of standing up for ourselves, we're fast becoming a nation of victims...kinda like england ;) ...sorry, couldn't resist...anyway, yeah, some are gonna be weak regardless of what happens, but those usually have other ways to compensate...a good many people have a tendancy to think that a big, muscular guy is an idiot, don 't know how to think, and that because he's a jock, that's all he is...if you look at many of the mixed martial artists today that fight professionally, you'll find a great many college degrees in many different subjects...same with pro football players...a lot of those guys were only able to go to college due to football...another fine example is the united states military special forces....these guys are extremely fit, hugely intelligent, and, not the least bit important, competent in either team or individual sports and activities....(note that i didn't mention military inteligence...no such thang:D )

or he could learn basic human anatomy and know all the best places to strike to hurt someone, to stun them. I'm not that strong physically(although I'm not weak either), but I have nonetheless been able to hurt quite a few people stronger than me, and No I wasn't using weapons.

letting oneself be picked on is not what I consider intelligent.

"the biggest reason we have such a problem with bullying, is that we've started teaching our kids that instead of standing up for ourselves, we're to go tell the nearest adult that we're being picked on..."

so far we agree.

"if you look at many of the mixed martial artists today that fight professionally, you'll find a great many college degrees in many different subjects..."

I have nothing against Martial Arts.

"same with pro football players...a lot of those guys were only able to go to college due to football..."

if they were only able to go to college due to football, then they couldn't exactly be very smart.

You haven't heard of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold? They were the two guys who shot up Columbine.

Supposedly your ring finger will be longer than your index finger if you have high testosterone, so the ring finger reference was a joking way of saying they had low testosterone.

letting oneself be picked on is not what I consider intelligent.

They didn't let themselves get picked on on purpose, they probably just didn't know how to respond to it.
