Let's talk about Bullshit and media hype. Detroit, like they have nothing better to do then bury a word. It burns me up that the so called African American people of this country that are actually repsonsible for high drug use , murder with firearms and using racial slurs still are the ones accusing people of racism.

You think that the rappers and hip hop artists are going to stop using the word nigger in their lyrics? These are the same people that refer to themselves as Nigger just in casual talk. What other ethnic group uses slurs for themselves? I don't walk around to my neighbors and say "What's up Cracker". I've never heard a Mexican refer to each other as the wetback across the street. The list goes on.

Let me end this little rant by stating that I am not prejudice. I just feel the racial problems in this country are still alive mostly ( Not entirely) from the black communities complaining about themselves.

If the Mayor was elected a community leader...and the Mayor was asked to make some gesture reduce the racial strife in that city...and the gesture was intended to be received by blacks and whites and all others, what is so terrible about it? What is wrong with it? Are they supposed to do nothing about it because they are black? They are citizens like anyone else, with concerns like anyone else.

The Mayor in Detroit has no responsibility for what happens in the world of rap music, drug addictions, or anything else like that. You say you are not a racist, yet it almost appears that you leveled some accusations at the black community. The truth is, not every Black person in America follows the stereotype that you present here. There are other races committing crimes and singing raps and using the word Nigger as well...blacks dont have the exclusive on that, and not every Black person permits that sort of behavior in their home. Insofar as your reference to crime....being a criminal is either something you "are" or you "arent." It just depends on whether or not you happen to be committing criminal acts at a given point in your life. Crime really doesnt have any racial lines to it, unless someone chooses to ascribe racial lines to it for propaganda, or to swing an election, or some other subversive purpose. No one wakes up in the morning, looks at themselves in the mirror and says "I am black....I must commit crime today because I am black." No one does that, and it is wrong to put forth such nonsense.

Perhaps the Mayor's gesture was meant to send a simple message to all people. It may well be that in Detroit, the Mayor and others would like to see a change in the way all people behave and treat each other. Symbolicly burying the "N" word might spark a movement designed to let the word and the concept pass on into history, and have little or no place to occupy in our future. Bury the word....bury the stereotypical aspects....bury negative behaviors...create a more peaceful co-existance. Nothing is wrong with any of that.

I remember Detroit. I spent much of my time there. My family is there. I remember in the 60's hearing "Stupid Pollocks" "Stupid Wops" "Kikes" "Coons" "Spearchuckers" "Krauts" "Nips" "Chinks" etc...etc...etc ....... such words were common place among the citizenry in Detroit at that time. You see, Detroit was a real melting pot of racial hatred in those days and it was not limited to the blacks by any means. In time, racial slurrs went away....only the slurs directed at Blacks and Jews seemed to remain steadfast, but now, they too were somewhat fading away. The City will one day not be divided along racial lines in connection politics. I am sure that the Mayor grew up in Detroit and saw and heard some things, and he may have vowed to be instrumental in effecting a positive change.

In time...with the help of symbolic gestures and a public that slowly grows away from the concept of negative racism, the words "Kike" and "Nigger" and other derogatory racial slurs will fade from the "normal" scene in American, just like other such words have left us in the past. It will open yet a new era for us to explore. Things might just heal.

Maybe there were other ways to do this besides holding a funeral for the "N" word...but I can appreciate some things in the gesture. I certainly dont think that gesture was made to spark a riot.

If you have African blood in your veins, then you have a right to refer to yourself as such. You dont have to be African born to be African.

I happen to be of a German Mother and Polish Father. I speak quite a bit of German. If I want to, I can claim Polish or German, or BOTH for that matter. My Son was born in the old country....he lives here now....and he is not required to forget who he is or where he comes from, or how his family came to be in the World.

If we subscribe to a "WHITE" and "BLACK" exclusive labeling system, then next you will want to pass City Ordinances against all these little towns that hold "German Fests" or "May Fests" or "October Fests" at which Lederhosen is worn, and German music and beer are the order of the day. I have drank beer with blacks at those festivals. If they want to have an African celebration, then that is just as well. I just worked part time at a Nigerian Reunion Festival in Dallas a few nights ago. A few thousand black people showed up. We had not one fight, and no one was smoking dope in the parking lot or the bathroom. The drinking was much more moderate than it was in the German Fests.

I tell you that times are changing from what they were....society is moving ahead of the negativity that was there in the past. It is not yet gone....but we are better off than we were. Let the progess continue. Dont hamper it by pointing fingers.

There is free speech in this country...so they do have a right to call themselves Nigger, which is the label and moniker of an ignorant slave. However; I do know that many black people have never uttered a word of protest about slavery, as they consider it acts in history before their time, and they live without issue of it in this country in our society today. I for one believe that all slave owners are long dead and passed. All slaves are long dead and passed. Black soldiers fought alongside white soldiers in the civil war, and Lincoln guaranteed a black soldier equal pay to a white soldier. Many whites and blacks died upon the battlefield. When the war ended, a black was immediately elected to Congress. Slavery was outlawed, and all should have moved on. Slavery has been dead for 140 years...the shame of it was paid for in blood of the slain Sons in the war of the rebellion. It is over. I agree with you wholeheartedly that it is over.
