I suggest when driving, that you watch license plates a lot closer than normal for the number 666 and combinations of 666 and in this way you will avoid frustrating traffic situations and possibly accidents. The anger and obscenities of other drivers are the devil in disguise and the number 666 in their license plates will help you spot them and avoid them. Don’t hesitate, change lanes immediately, God will protect you.

666 is the sign of the devil...the Lord God does not allow him to wander invisible and has devised several methods to remind and caution us that he is present...666 is one of them. For the sake of the others on this forum that have normal mental capacity, I'll go ahead and mention this. The number 666 in the Bible is derived from converting letters into numbers. The original text could actually have been interpreted "666" or "616". The former was chosen due to its uniformity. Since we established the number through a conversion of letters to numbers, the same can be done for names. The Roman Emperor Nero, famous for slaughtering Christians by the thousands, was believed to be the anti-Christ due to the fact that his name, like the original text in the Bible, could be converted to either "666" or "616". It could very well be a coincidence, but since the book of Revelation was written in the first century AD, it's quite possible that John meant this connection.

As an additional note, the Bible doesn't say that the Number of the Beast and the Mark of the Beast are the same thing, so for no reason should the number 666 be hated, feared, et cetera. It's just a number.

A friend of mine also pointed this out to me. The binary equivalent of 666 is 1010011010. If you invert and reverse the first five numbers (10100), you get 11010 -- the same as the second set of five numbers. This number is certainly not unique in this way, but it's still interesting, if you're into that sort of thing.

I always figured that since the Jewish folks miscalculated what the messiah would actually be like and do, it is possible that Christians would make the same mistake with new testament prophecy. Some take preterism to an extreme though, like evil already being banished. Just looking around us, that doesn't seem likely.

You can't disprove God with logic, but that doesn't mean you should get all tight assed about it. Believe it or not, religion can be supported logically. It was the teaching of St. Thomas-Aquinas that faith and reason go hand in hand, and I have never seen this to be false. Some of the world's best theologians were more thoughtful, intelligent, and educated than you probably will ever be (St. Augustine comes to mind).

Limbo: I have heard of Preterism, and I believe there is some credit to it. A Catholic theologian (I believe it was Augustine, actually) suggested that we are already living in the "end times", and essentially have been since the Resurrection. Most Catholic theologians I've heard have largely viewed the book of Revelation as a metaphorical account of what was taking place in Rome at the time and was meant to inspire Christians with its talk of ultimate triumph by the faithful. The way in which it was written also very much resembles a Catholic Mass. If you study the Mass and read the book of Revelation, you'll see what I mean. That's actually how Scott Hahn first became interested in Catholicism.
