If this shit would have happened in India or Somalia or some other fucked up country like Indonesia there would have been a headline something like...

"Indonesian Ferry Sinks, Over One Thousand People Dead!"

What the hell is the problem with these backward countries? They don't seem to be able to a damn thing right like advanced western countries. In the U.S. if we have a major Earthquake we get...

"Big Earthquake in California, 34 dead."

Same exact thing in fucking India...

"Big Earthquake in India, 340,000 dead."

Some government regulations (building construction, fire safety, food inspections, drivers licenses, etc) really do kick ass, don't they? They just ain't got the....

and it'd really be a pain in the ass to start up programs like these in a backwards country with fifty trillion people, dirt for infrastructure, and centuries' worth of "doing it the old fashioned way".

True point and pretty much the answer I was looking for. Now the question must be asked here as to why they have "centuries' worth of doing it the old fashioned way?" Why, in the 21st Century do we still have backward countries? Why, as an example, do we have morons such as the "spiritual leader" of Saudi Arabia, an islamist nut case, recently declaring that the Earth was flat and anyone who says it is not is defying the koran and must be punished? We have a clue here I think.
