What the hell happened here? They went from being a fairly good band, to kind of a retarded band, to a bunch of pole smokers. I've heard of keeping up with the times, even in music, but this is just fucking retarded... St. Anger? Dave Mustain sent those lyrics to them as a joke and they use them in a song without figuring that out? Come on, these guys made it through high school didn't they, or are they just straight out retarded? I also like how their guitar player went from a Hispanic to a pale ghost.

As soon as Hetfield's voice changed the band was going down. He used to be a true screamer, and now he sounds like a cowboy on downers and southern comfort. This correlated roughly to when the band's lyrical style changed from rape, war, and slavery to crying over a dead horse or some shit.
Some of their later stuff was alright, but none of it worth buying any of the newer albums for.

Lessee... Dave Mustaine was ousted back when the lyrics were all about war and vengeance (you know, fun stuff :D) ... he went on to form Megadeth (which I think was a much better band) ... and after Black, Nirvana took the spotlight and Metallica decided after a long hiatus to be part of the alternative crowd... then nothing was the same, even though I sort of liked a few songs, they WERE NO LONGER METALLICA... it would have been better for all if they simply retired Metallica and started anew with their alternative material, at least they wouldn't have had to live up..

I like Nirvana... The only Metallica song I have heard is "One" when I played it on Guitar Hero 3.

That was the first Metallica song I'd heard, too, and I liked it enough to download the whole discography. :D

Most would say Black and moving backwards.

meh, that pretty much sums it up...i know a lot of people who think that they sold out with the black album just because of how much play it got on the radio

I didn't even care for Black that much, Enter Sandman was pretty cool though.

Black was my personal favorite... sort of a go-between of Puppets and the new stuff... but after Load, Re-Load, and Blow-My-Load... :D ... not Metallica at all, really.

Ignoring Bullfighter's, rather... obscure outburst.
I got black... I liked Unforgiven, Enter Sandman, Sad But True, The God That Failed... and I think I'm forgetting a couple.

An outburst doesn't necessarily have to be in anger... It can be in joy, as well, it just has to be a sudden upsurge of emotion.
