I happen to be a rapper. And I'm lead vocalist for my metal band. There's okay rap, it just takes a different kind of talent to be a rapper than it does to be a rocker.

OK, first of all, let me just clear up that while rap does not necessarily entail "cappin' cops 'n' bangin' sistahs" ("Can I live?" comes to mind), or ghetto talk (ICP comes to mind, although they suck), it still has no musical qualities to it. There is no melody, and rarely any chord progression. The accompaniment doesn't usually have much musical quality to it, either, but it certainly can. That said, I'm not a fan of rap music, or R&B for that matter. But I'm also not a huge fan of heavy metal. I like Metallica somewhat but that's it. Mostly I listen to older music like Black Sabbath, ELP, Yes, Genesis, The Who (I'm not a huge fan of the Who but they're alright), Rennaissance, Ambrosia, and so on. I also like a lot of more obscurities as long as it's good musically.

Musical issues aside, I side with the girl as far as the argument itself. Surely the purpose of "bullshit.com" seems to be "come here and express your highly controversial points of view so we can flame the fuck out of you" but ehhh...

Most of the flamers look like dumbasses though. :P

News Flash: Rap hasn't been around that long. It sure as hell wasn't around in the '70s, and if anything it was just starting in the '80s. Rock has been around since the '50s, and black people were singing like Elvis long before he came around.

Another news flash: Not all country is depressing "my dog ran away with my wife in my ford with my kids and my rifle" bullshit either. Country is a good thing in moderation for me, but the only rap song I'll ever listen to is "Can I Live" because I like the message, but I still wouldn't listen to that when I want to listen to music. Country has also been around a helluva lot longer than rap and even rock. In fact, some of country's roots are in traditional Irish music. That stuff is hundreds of years old. It's definitely evolved since then. Nowadays a lot of country takes rock influence.

As old as country and rock are, Bach, the writer of the really good music, is - get this - 1600's era. Talk about old. People still love Bach, and those that don't, have their head up their ass, at least from a musical standpoint.
