Anyone else have a problem with their external hard drives? I buy them to hold large files that don't all fit into my laptop's tiny little 80GB drive, but I've now had 3 of them hit the floor. The first two times I was patient enough to replace it, and then spend weeks on end replacing the data that I had lost. But this time the total ammount of data is about twice as much as before, and I don't know if I have any patience remaining. At least I was smart enough this time to back up a portion of the files on DVDs as well.
So anyways, to the point. Is there any way for me to fix this thing? It just dropped 3 feet to the carpeted (but concrete) floor below. Now the damn thing just turns on, beeps once, and my computer doesn't even recognize that it's plugged in. I know I could spend about a thousand bucks to have some company retrieve the data for me, but the data is replaceable, and I don't intend to spend that much money retrieving the data that I had originally. Realistically, I am willing to spend up to about a hundred bucks to solve this problem, otherwise I think I'll just kick myself in the ass a few thousand times while buying a new drive once more and replacing everything that I've lost, and maybe weld the fucker to the wall so it can't drop to the floor again.
