O.K. I'll probably have to move immediatley after posting this so if you dont hear from me for awhile they have killed me.
If you wanna go off the grid try this. Rip out all the plastic and other non-metal items out of your trunk. install a 5 kw propane generator.
remove the gas engine out of your front wheel drive car and replace it with
a 25 hp electric motor ( youll have to make a adapter butt if you can build the car im confident youll manage) change the gear ratio in the transmission and after plugging it in to the generator and modifying the fuel pedal into a electric switch you,ll be able to run the generator for 48 hrs on 18 gallons of propane (that cost $18.00 to fill up) you may not be able to drive 80 mph butt you will get there and it will save you $$$ not to mention you can idle your car and power your house and eliminate the electric bill too.
we produce more propane than any other country and we have almost an endless supply. It will also eliminate 40 percent of emmisions from vehicles alone. How far can you drive in 48 hrs Im betting you'll quit before you run out of propane fill up your car with gas and drive and I bet your car will run out of gas before you do! True logic is slapping you in the face yet you wont wake up!!!!

When gas hits $8.00 a gallon, and it will, my motorcycle at 45 mpg will be my friend.
My car will be a total luxury that I will use for very special occasions.
I'll work solely from my home as I won't be able to really go anywhere when it rains or when it's too cold for the motorcycle.
I'll save the gas in the car for emergency trips to the hospital, dentist, doctor, Tax Guy, and Grocery Store.
Luckily I am in the best shape of my life, and my bicycle and I have a long history of racing, not to mention just riding. I can go a long way on my bike with a few plates of salmon and brown rice! :D

run a car on propane? I don't think that's possible... I don't know much about cars though...

yeah, they have converter kits for some older vehicles...problem is, there's a severe loss of power with a full conversion...but, they do have propane assisted injection for deisels that gives you between 15 and 35% more economy and power...pricey, tho....kit for my truck, a 3/4 4x4 F250 runs about 4 grand

Hell, for 15% better economy you'd make up for that in a day

I wasn't going to say anything, but since you're one of those people who thinks he owns a thread just because he started it, here's what I think of your idea: it blows.

How much slower would you have to go with a propane engine? Would 50 be too fast?

I have a motorcycle that get 45 mpg if I stay off the throttle, and if I keep it under 60 mph.
I've used it on weekends to shuttle myself around.
Not practical for business.

it isn't speed so much as loss of torque....you just cannot make a full propane engine pull 80k pounds....but the there's new tech out there for direct-drive hydraulics that's pretty exciting...ran across a driver a few months ago that was pulling a hummer with that system....he said (not accepting it as gospel, mind) that hummer got 63 mpg and could go 100+ at 1000 rpms

It's not really a matter of speed, it's a matter of acceleration. It's the difference between a car that can go from 0-60 in 4 seconds or one that can do 0-60 in 12 seconds. Also with not enough power, going up a hill can be impossible (since gravity is essentially "accelerating" you towards the center of the earth).
