A long time ago, someone told me, "Never bullshit a bullshitter." That applies to you and to me. So the next paragraph is devoid of BS.

I was following the reasoning I had been reading here about global warming, and applying it to the nuclear winter idea.

Now back to some BS for this paragraph. Americans, by definition, are in the right (or if wrong, only slightly and always with good intention), so whatever they do and say is right. Other peoples are guilty until proven innocent, and they never can quite clean off their foreignness and alienosity. And no amount of money is too much to spend on anything (especially exotic weaponry, pie-in-the-sky energy beams, etc.), EXCEPT the relative pittance it would take to make a serious dent in poverty.

Good night now, and let me pray for a world where there are no empires any more, neither "evil" nor "well-intentioned."

p.s. The whole concept of "white people" is BS, though the apparently sincere belief in it drives a lot of modern BS. I consider myself mixed race, though I could also claim that we all originate in Africa...

Do we have a thread on that yet? (e.g., racially compare Hitler, Dick Cheney, Vaclav Havel, Kurt Vonnegut, George Carlin, Mark Twain, Henry Moore, Henry Miller, and Eric Hoffer... For that matter, racially compare Mike Tyson, Frederick Douglass, Idi Amin, Nelson Mandela, Ishmael Reed, Colin Powell, Thurgood Marshall, James Brown, and Malcolm X... If GW Bush doesn't disprove eugenics, I don't know what does... And technically and scientifically speaking, Obama is as much "white" as he is "black".)

I am not running for president. That office has been besmirched by BS that is so amazing that it's amazing it didn't completely dematerialize the world by now... I never thought someone could come along that would make me the slightest bit nostalgic for Nixon, but that's what happened... It's kind of like Godzilla making you think Don Corleone wasn't so bad after all.

Hey guys, anyone ever see the recently declassified millitary footage of the "Davey Crocket" tests?

This was a less than brilliant idea of some high-brass clusters back in the late 40's when we were still "experimenting' with nukes.

Some poor-bastard G.I.'s were chosen to dig foxholes, and launch a low grade tactical nuke VIA SHOULDER MOUNTED ROCKET toward approaching tanks. The intent was to knock the tanks out by the hundreds.

However, no thought was given to radiation exposure of the poor-bastard G.I.'s.

The file footage is yellowed from radiation, but you should see these poor bastards launch the nuke, have a small mushroom cloud appear, oh, say, about 1 mile distant from them. Then these poor bastards had to get out of their foxholes and march staggeringly toward the cloud.

Of course, they were dead from radiation sickness in short order.

Rediculous.

Also, Carl Sagan said it best, I believe. He said that nuclear winter or not, there would be SURVIVORS of a large-scale nuclear holocost. And that in itself was frightening enough to forstall any nuclear conflict!

I agree.

Nuclear winter is bullshit. If a nuclear war were to happen, all the major cities would be wiped out but many people would still survive and rebuild.

It is highly unlikely that every square inch of this country would get covered in radioactive dust. It would require an assload of bombs, and most of them would be targeted at almost literally nothing. Even the terrorists wouldn't be stupid enough to bomb Wayne County NY for instance, and most of that county is far enough away from Rochester and Syracuse to not be badly affected if either of those cities were hit with a bomb (of course it depends on the bomb, a Fat Boy definitely, but a Tsar Bomba probably not).

My city, for instance, is the 97th most populous city in the nation. If our prospective attackers were to discriminate their targets based on population, they would have to drop 97 bombs before this backwater sewer met its demise. Now, I'm not saying they don't have the capability to do this, but they could cripple this nation with only a few bombs, and then maybe they'd have something left to conquer, effectively giving us citizens something to shoot at.

I agree, General.
There probably would be survivors. Wiping out the entire human race would be almost impossible.

I, for one, may not want to be one of the survivors, in a full-scale nuclear attack.
It would not be pleasant. And if law and order broke down, you'd better have enough self-protection weaponry at hand to defend yourself, your family, and your important survival "stuff" when the roaming bands of lawless maniacs come calling.

Unless you happen to live like a hermt anyway somewhere in the middle of nowhere, and escape the fallout.
Then you may not even know it happened...

General,

It wasn't only population numbers that determined if you were targeted, at least by the Russians. The city I grew up in, Pittsfield MA, was targeted because General Dynamics produces missle guidance systems here, that and GE had plants and their plastics facitlity here. I know GE was also very active in Syracuse, you might have been in the fallout zone after all.

Of course, population isn't the sole factor, I was just using that as an example. We have Bausch & Lomb and Kodak, for instance; the former makes optics and the latter makes film. I don't think a bomb going off in Syracuse would really affect us though, unless the attackers used a ridiculously sized bomb. More likely they'd size it so that they wouldn't waste their nuclear yield on the 100 miles of corn fields and cows separating Rochester from Syracuse.

ballzack

I read a document a few years ago, recently declassified, about targeting systems.

The article stated that it would be impossible for targeting systems, at the time (circa 1970), manufactured in the Soviet Socialist Republic, nor the other communist block countries, to accurately target within a 15% accuracy range.

So, back in the 60's and 70's, warheads destined for Syracuse would most likely have fallen within a 210 mile radius (according to my Algebra). Anywhere from Buffalo to Albany, if you take in to account the point-to-point mis-accuracy.

I can picture some poor little Burg like Danville, NY accidently being ground zero due to inaccuracy.

But we all had a scorched-earth policy, so there would be multiple warheads.

It's when a nuclear war blows up the earth. :p

Actually no, but it's pretty much the same idea, that the detonation of a large number of bombs would cause soot to block out the sun, similar to the eruption of a super volcano.

Of course, the power of a super volcano is tremendously greater than any nuclear weapon we've made, but that's never really pointed out.

Just more stupid armageddon crap.

You would be suprised at how far a relatively small amount of radioactive dust can spread. You also have the EMP to worry about.

The EMP is caused by the blast, but it doesn't spread much further than the blast itself does. Even if it did, the only effects would be to scramble any electronic device not shielded by a Faraday cage. It doesn't affect humans.

Radioactive dust is more of a problem, but remote areas would still be relatively safe from it. There are plenty of areas that are hundreds of miles away from anything worth wasting a bomb on. If New York City were bombed I doubt Syracuse would be in trouble.

You must be in the Dakotas. I'm currently in the midwest for the weekend and it's balmy.;)

Not that I agree with global warming at all. Just making a weather observation. The country is currently enjoying unusually warm weather for mid October, except for the nortwwest. Drive 400 miles east from where you are at and you'll probably pick up 30 degrees! Highs today in some parts of the midwest are supposed to be in the low 80's. Nice.

Global warming , Bullshit!!!
http://www.idahostatesman.com/102/story/530075.html

But one commentor said this : Here in Denver this summer, we had a record 22 straight days of temps over 90. That had never happened before. Ever. In recorded history. Guess what...that WAS NOT evidence supporting the theory of global warming. In the same way, the earliest snow in Boise’s history IS NOT evidence against the theory of global warming.

Single instances of extreme weather are just that—weather…not evidence. Simple minded loons of the far left and far right who jump up and exclaim the latest oddity of climate proves their favorite prejudice, are either idiots, lying, or just badly informed (that seems more polite than the equally accurate ‘ignorant.’)

So, to the 3/4s of you right-wingers posting here today (but just today…will be left-wingers some other day), which are you?

Interesting!
