My first car was a 1950 Chevy 2 door coupe that my older brother gave me in 1970. I was 16 years old at the time and it worried my parents so much that when I went on a camping trip with some friends , my mom sold it ! FOR $35.00 !

Your parents are morons. Horses don't even have seatbelts.

And it was a jeep cherokee.

2004 Saturn ION 3. I bought it with bonds my grandmother got me when I was a kid. As it turned out, the license plate number they gave us ended in the same four digits as her phone number did. It's in a thousand pieces somewhere now. :(

My grandma's 1994 Ford Tempo. I got it from her in 2001 (started driving in 2000, but not on my own...mom's orders). I got it in March and it was totalled by some old lady in July. Then, I got a hunk of junk 1997 Pontiac Sunfire GT...I missed the reliability and no payments of the Tempo.

Hey, I remember those bugs. And yes, they would not die.

My 70 Charger was actually a piece of shit. Chrysler did not exactly build them for durability back then. One winter with salt on the roads and you had Swiss cheese the next spring.

There were three motors standard in the Charger back then. 318 small block V8 (most reliable), 383 big block, and the classic 426 Hemi! Screamer.
You could burn rubber and actually SEE the gas guage drop 1/8th of a tank! :D

The 318 was probably the most reliable V8 Chrysler has mad to date. Placing it in a Charger is not a good match though. That engine was great in something like a Dodge Dart and because of the abundance of performance aftermarket parts enhancements were rather cheap.

As far as the most reliable Chrysler engine it would have to be the slant six. Hell, those damn things would run forever. Had a friend who nearly ran one out of oil when the rods started knocking. We did an oil change and the knock went away and it never lost compression. Have not tested but they just may be bullet proof also.:D

That's true, but a lot of Chargers did come with the 318. I remember Chrysler used to sell a lot of 318's to rebuild companies for commercial vehicles for drop-ins on ambulance or similar public service vehicles. Decent horsepower for the size. Not a tire-burner, but it got you there. I had a friend with a Super Bee. He blew up his 383 magnum, could not afford a new one, so dropped in a 318, then put 340 heads on it. And a Holly 4 barrel. That puppy screamed for a small block V-8.

Never had a 426 hemispherical, however, I drove a few. Tire-burners for sure. My Charger was a 383, not a hemi. I remember a section of my owner's manual stating that if I was driving a 426, there was NO warranty. Too bad, so sad, once you drive it off the lot, you own it.

I also had a 72 Duster with a slant SIX. YEP, GRRRRREAT engine! Put 220k on it, and that was unheard of in those days!

I think someone fished it out of a lake.

1973 cutlass supreme. A rust bucket, but damn did that motor sound sweet. A 350 V8, with very little pollution control, no catalytic converter. Purred like a kitten.

I remember working on my 70 Charger. Open the hood with and you could damn near climb in next to the motor to work on it. Today, it's too packed. You can barely get your hand in between all the high-tech emmissions crap.

You had plugs, points, condensor. Coil, wires to the plugs, a carberator, fuel pump, manifold , and that was about it. It was a piece of cake to work on.

Ah, those were the days, boys. Those were the days.

I can't say I get the whole fascination with working on these old cars. I fucking hate working on cars, of ANY age. The car I just got rid of leaked coolant and transmission fluid for over 3 years, started up like a dying dog, and died at intersections. I was so glad to be rid of it that I based my latest vehicle purchase on the best warranty (which was Dodge), just so I wouldn't have to fuck with that shit anymore.

I hear that, Jim. Back in the day, when cars were simple, it was easy to fix them yourself. It was kind of a hobby for me back then. Hell, I can't change the spark plugs on my 08 German import. I can't even get TO them! You'd need a Robotic Arm! :D

Plus, I'm too busy now to waste my valuable time trying to figure out what's wrong with my car.

I say that about computers all the time! I used to build them from the ground up. Then after Windows '95, they sucked and were a pain to work on. Kinda like the car I got rid of... damn Canadian parts!

A Dodge Nitro!

Looks just like the Jeep Liberty (or so my wife says)... It's an excellent ride! Not crazy about the MPG's, but try cramming a baby into a Prius! :D Hell, we looked at the Caliber first and had the same problem.

Renaschelle
08-10-2008, 12:17 AM
The Caliber was so small, if you went grocery shopping with a baby, kid, or anyone in the back seat, you would only be able to get about 5-6 bags of groceries. For a family, it is not practical.

The Nitro is nice and roomy. I liked the way it looked and the amount of room on the interior was nice and roomy with a big carseat in the back.

You have to admit though, it was pretty sporty. I was mostly going for the MPGs when I picked it out for the newspaper ad, though, which might not have been a great idea considering that gas prices are variable, while luggage is constant.

The PT and the Scion are butt ugly to me.

I did, however, recently rent a Chevy HHR. The nostalgic look of that mini-SUV is not too bad (to me).
And I loved the 32 mph it got.

I took it on a 400 mile trip and it was comfortable. But I'm not a 300 lb porker, either. It is a smaller type of vehicle. If you are rather large, you may need some lubricant to fit comfortably in the cockpit. :D
