This is why I love Quantum mechanics !! It doesnt get a whole lot weirder than this. I used to think it was BS but it does apply to " Super positions " which is something being in two states simataniously ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EN-jCuV7BoU

I minored in Physics in college, man.

Allright.... so what do you think...... hocuspocus (bs)!? Perversion of the scientific prosess !? How can you say that measureing.... in this case simply observing the rusult is to influence that result !?

Easy, go study the uncertainty principle. Simply stated...
It is impossible to conduct an experiment without effecting the outcome of the experiment. In other words; the observer cannot operate independently of that which is observed. To observe is, by its very nature, to alter and change the outcome. The observer and the observed are, in effect, one process. One phenomenon of this relationship is quantum entangling. Shrodinger's cat is a rather crude, but very effective thought experiment, demonstrating the uncertainty principle. The cat, until the box is opened (observed) is in a constant state of uncertainty relative to the observer on the outside of the box.

The results of ANY experiment can only be stated in terms probable, and never terms absolute. Or, that is to say, the results can only be expressed in degrees of probability.

Wow, interesting post. Quantum Mechanics is a micro-hobby of mine. Well, the STUDY of it is a hobby of mine, anyway!
Freak, did not realize you were a Physics major. For me it was business admin, with a computer programming minor.
I guess that's why I am facinated with non-business related SCIENCE study.
Prometheus. Thanks for the post. Interesting.
Decayed and NOT decayed at the same time. Dead and ALIVE at the same time. A paradox indeed, if you buy into the theory. But since we can't prove it wrong, we have to at least contemplate that it may be correct!

It's certainly a conundrum, but I still don't quite understand why it has to be the case. Why can't we just "not know"?

The answer is in the Uncertainty Principle, GS. To long to go into here, but when you grasp the Uncertainty Principle, it makes perfect sense.

Yeah, ballzack, same here. For me, physics was a minor in college (my major was Marketing and Economics) now, as a hobby, I study physics and I'm fascinated by quantum mechanics. Its really mind boggling stuff. Check this out...

Silicon electronics are a staple of the computing industry, but researchers are now exploring other techniques to deliver powerful computers.
A quantum computer is a theoretical device that would make use of the properties of quantum mechanics, the realm of physics that deals with energy and matter at atomic scales.
