Anyone have any thoughts on the Coen Brother's "The Big Lebowski" and being dude-like? ;)

No One can be like the Dude.
So true...
"I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, uh, That, or uh, his Dudeness, or uh Duder, or uh El Duderino, if, you know, you're not into the whole brevity thing--uh."
- Jeffery Lebowski, AKA; The Dude

THE BIG LEBOWSKI is one of my favorites and only the last time I watched it, did I realize that its a send up or Raymond Chandler's THE BIG SLEEP which REALLY made me feel dumb because I've seen that one at least a dozen times.
I like Jeff Bridges in just about everything he's done, but his portrayal of The Dude just reminds me of a remark Frank McCourt ("Angela's Ashes") made to the effect that "People should just leave people alone". The Dude may be pretty useless by the standards of most political and religious "isms", but he seems like a hell of a nice guy who seems to be able to transcend a lot of crap and move on. A commendable way to be.

Quite so ! ,, for myself , John Goodman is the star , a man's actor , I once read his reply to the question about how he got into acting ,, " Too lazy to work , too nervous to steal " was his reply ,, a reply that any redneck can relate to.

I have to agree that Goodman's character is certainly a key to this movie - he's the reactionary redneck to Bridges' burned out hippie transcendent. He's also great in RAISING ARIZONA, OH BROTHER and BARTON FINK. I think he's one of those actors who really gets into it when he gets a director who gives him some room to explode and the Coen Bros. may be a lot of things, but conservative isn't one of them. He was also good in SEA OF LOVE with Pacino and MOTHER NIGHT with Nick Nolte. I'd like to see Goodman, Bridges and the Coens do smething else together. They keep getting better.
