While it can harm the economy, I seriously doubt it's to blame for the global economic downturn, or even be that major of a factor.

i think it's larger than you suppose, simply because of banks forced to give credit to anybody with a ssn...and banks giving credit cards to illegals...here's an excerpt from a past story on npr:

In Los Angeles, immigrants who don't have credentials to work in the United States can still get a credit card, thanks to a pilot program run by Bank of America. The bank is hoping to tap a fast-growing market by offering credit cards to illegal immigrants without Social Security numbers.

Bank of America is testing the new credit-card program at about 50 Los Angeles branches. Applicants don't need a Social Security number or a traditional credit check to qualify. But they do need to have a Bank of America checking account with no recent history of bounced checks.

Critics are condemning the program, saying the bank is knowingly marketing credit cards to illegal immigrants.

Under the pilot program, cardholders typically put up a deposit to guarantee payment of their credit card bills. They also pay a relatively high interest rate — in some cases, more than 21 percent.

and a bit more from a recent blog:

So… can we find any evidence that illegals have impacted our country-wide (pun intended here) credit crunch? In recent years, banks across the country have begun offering checking accounts and, in some cases, mortgages to the nation’s fast-growing ranks of undocumented immigrants, most of whom are Hispanic. These immigrants generally haven’t been able to get major credit cards, making it hard for them to develop a credit history and expand their purchasing power. A few banks and mortgage providers, including Banco Popular and now Citibank, have started programs that allow illegal immigrants to buy homes by using an identifier issued by the IRS, known as the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). The ITIN number is usually issued to individuals who may file tax returns but are not eligible to get a Social Security Number.

i dunno just how large a cause it could be, but it's definitely a contributing factor

Well, it certainly seems larger than I first thought it was. Giving credit cards to illegal immmigrants is ridiculous, I can't beleive that any banks would even consider it or that it's even legal.

Sure on paper it looks like you're making money (to the banks), but illegals are never going to pay it back. I mean, it's enough trouble as it is when actual citizens borrow more than they'll ever be able to repay.

It's the credit card/ loan culture in overdrive. How long was encouraging people to borrow more mone to pay for other debts going to work? It's all built on a false economy.

Indeed.

I have a friend whom ran a small business, and he declared chapter 7 both business and personal two months ago. Today, he has three credit cards ready to be charged up to about $10 k each. Unreal.

Sadly, ChiChi, you are correct on face value.

WWII got us out of the great depression, NOT FDR. Wars tend to go to the root of the problem.
Guns or Butter economics.
If butter is not working, you make guns.

I'm not touting war. Just posing a fact of history.

Problem is, the war has to be a proper war, not an annihilation of a weak country.
(I'm no expert, but I assume that's the case)

What we need to do is make companies pay the same amount to illegals as they do to legal workers. Then they'd have no incentive to hire them, except if they actually deserve the job.

Yes sir.
That would do it.

I don't hire illegals, and I don't hire anyone that does not speak English. I have two employees that speak Spanish because I do a bit of business in Mexico and in Southern Florida....sadly...a Spanish speaking state...

Gee I found it funny that the NPR story said that 21% is a high intrest rate. I thought that was about average after they pulled the teaser rate that you got the card for. ( I wouldn't know, I don't believeing in living beyond my means- I would take a mortage- but that is all )

And even though we all speak english, it is not the official language of the US. And when you look at the history of Florida it makes perfect sense that there are so many Spanish speakers.

Anywhere from 12%-19% is average. 4-9% is low. If you credit sucks, 20%'s is norm. Start defaulting and you're in the 30%'s.

All movies and major network television shows are in English. Commercials are in English unless special provisions are made. Highway signs are in English. English is a core school subject while Spanish is an elective. Instructions are in English first, Spanish second. Most contractual paperwork is in English without special provisions. All presidents give their speeches in English while an interpretor translates...

Get the picture? While not the 'official' language, it passes as the predominant language with flying colors.

This is a very dangerous statement. See my post "Beware My Fellow Americans, for we are still under attack".

HOW do you invade a country without sending in troops? Answer, DISRUPT their CULTURE. What's the FIRST step in doing this if you are the invader?
IMPOSE YOUR CULTURE OVER THEIRS.

What's the first step in doing this?
Change their common method of Communication - DISRUPT THEIR LANGUAGE.

WHY? A common language is the core of unity. Break that unity you can break the established culture.

No, I do NOT agree that Florida (Whom I happen to be a resident of) should be Spanish speaking. Regardless of History. This is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and our COMMON LANGUAGE is ENGLISH. It's the Language that our fathers spoke as they defended this country from invaders. It is the language we are using on this BBS. English may NOT be a language that by law we are forced to speak, but our CULTURE is to speak English in America, and I'll willingly fight for my fellow American's right to keep it as the basis as OUR CULTURE.

Thanks to that fucking numb-nuts JIMMY CARTER, we allowed thousands of the WORST POSSIBLE CRIMINALS and VAGRANTS from Cuba to come here as refugees. We allowed Castro to shove it right up our asses. This absolutely fucked-up Miami Big Time.

Do I sound pissed? I am. Enough is enough. It's time to take back our cities, our culture, and OUR COUNTRY!!!! Enough of this politically correct Bullshit! "Oh what's the big deal, let them speak Spanish and give them this city and that city because it's the right thing to do." Bullshit indeed!

Illegal Immigrant? Get the fuck out! Don't want to speak our language? Hosta la Vista, Amigo! Don't let the border gate hit you in your Spanish-speaking ass on the way out!

ENOUGH!!!!

I say, Mexico and Cuba better start speaking English as their Primary language. And if you look at the history of Mexico AND Cuba, it makes perfect sense. ;)

Cause? to what? Let me think what you'll say...taxes? welfare? medical? and the reason the economy is so bad is because illegal immigration...that a close-minded view. We have a "war" going on, do you know how much money goes on that? $720 Million Each Day, that's a big number, and now if you get to think that we didn't just arrive there last weekend, its been going on for years! And the thing of welfare..really i know people from most races Whites, Blacks, etc. people that can work, can do something for themselves and choice not to cause they're too lazy or drug addicts. Anyway you look its crooked. and really what makes someone "illegal" not having a green or blue paper? what makes you "legal"? "i was born here, im AMERICAN!" American is a way of life, not a color of skin or a paper. and if being illegal is so bad then we all should deport ourselves to wherever we came from, cause its in history books that no one was invited!
