I've always been an advocate for good team names according to the sport and where the team plays. Because of this, I've wondered about the reasons for many team names. I'll list the reasons that my teams' names are so perfect here:

Minnesota Vikings - Football is a brutal heavy contact sport. The Vikings were known as brutal conquerors, making the team name perfect for the sport. A large proportion of Minnesota's population consists of Scandinavian background, making this Scandinavian link perfect to the region. It also helps that I am strongly Scandinavian myself, giving me the personal link to the team as well.

Minnesota Twins - The two largest cities in Minnesota are separated only by a river, and because of their similarities have long been known as the Twin Cities. I happen to have an extra personal link to the Twins as well, because I am a Twin myself.

Lakers & Timberwolves - Minnesota has had two basketball teams so far, the first being the Lakers. This was a perfect name for a Minnesota team because Minnesota is the state of Ten Thousand Lakes. The best that L.A. can do with the name is the land of Ten Thousand personal swimming pools. Maybe the land of Ten Thousand Ricki Lake Fans. They really need to change the team's name to something that is relevant to the location, and let Minnesota have the rights to it back.

The Timberwolves are more of a generic replacement for a great team name that was lost. Minnesota has supposedly a population of Timberwolves living within its wildlife, so the connection is somewhat acceptable.

North Stars & Wild - Minnesota has also had two Hockey teams. Minnesota is a cold state, and so a strongly hockey oriented state. Our first hockey team was named after the nickname of the state of Minnesota: L'etoile du Nord, or the North Star State. Since, Texas has stolen the team from us and named them after their own nickname, The Lone Star State. They have retained the rights to the original team name, and are so anal that they will never allow Minnesota to have another hockey team named the North Stars.

The Wild were introduced into the league after the Timberwolves had been created, and a team name and logo was chosen to make a connection between the two teams similar to the connection between Detriot's Lions and Tigers, or Chicago's Bears and Cubs. It's not the greatest team name, but at least it has an understandable and acceptable reason.

So, how about your teams? Do they have any good reason to their names? Be warned, that I have heard the reason for some of the teams' names and still disagree with them, so I might try to tell you how wrong your team's name is! LET THE BATTLE BEGIN!:D
