I loved "Poisonwood Bible". Her rendition of life in Africa is often factual, sometimes exaggerated. Overall I thought the religious allusions to be hilarious and sad but true.
I had trouble following "Pigs in Heaven" & "The Bean Trees"
Comments?

Hey Belzy, I wonder if you believe in God, in our Christ. If you enjoyed Poisonwood Bible, I wonder if you dont asked yourself what's going to happen when that biochemical reaction that we call life, stop in you whats going to happen?. Do you believe in a soul in an inmortal soul. A sould that may go in presence of God and be in communion the Lord for ever, do you ever think in Paradise? Do you believe in going to "the other side" and meet people like your family or friends or Christ himself? Or your life is only thinking in guys and having short affairs with your students in that University of yours? I dont know but you are very sad person if you do. The always stupid, vulcan.

Oh, probably another arrogant Atheist bitch with a lot of misguided ideas about religion then.
I find it kind of funny and I find it kind of sad (haha no that was not intentional) that you people claim to be smart, yet you say "oh, Christians believe this" or "oh, Christians believe that", and it's all a bunch of bullshit. But when someone who is actually in a position to say what Christians really believe, you just spout off about how smart you are, rather than trying to prove your bullshit assertion.

No, but ignorant assertions like the one you made tend to get on my nerves.

Have you read the Poisionwood Bible? Do you know what I am talking about?
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it--from garden seeds to Scripture--is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Based on your opinion of religion, I know exactly what comments like this tend to mean. If you'd like to try and prove me wrong, you can explain exactly what you meant; I will admit I'm assuming something based on probably 95% odds.

Yeah, but since you aren't trying to correct me, I can assume that my assertion was correct. Otherwise, no doubt you'd be explaining exactly what you meant by that statement. You know what you meant, and you know I know what you meant.

No, you are wrong. I just dont see the point in debating. This forum is about the literature. I would prefer discussing that with someone who has actually read the book.

What exactly were these religious allusions, and what did you find funny/sad/true about them?

The story is about missonaries going to Africa. They are totally ignorant of the environment, the culture, and how live in their new world. They are narrow in their beliefs and see everything the natives do as backwards or sinfull. This has been the problem of countless issues with other religons. There are many allusions which critique the role missionaries are the "Great White Hope".

I would hope people such as yourself (intelligent and questioning) would find more out of this than playing petty games and refusing to listen to logic.

List examples. There've been times I've listened to your logic. Other times I simply don't find it logical.

Apart from this nice little rank fest here, Many missionaries are understanding to other cultures. The experience is often mutual to both natives and the missionaries. They learn from eachother, and often times friendships blossom out of such things. You see, not all is bad :)

Not from my experience. I have had EXTENSIVE experience with these people. Most of the missonaries I have worked/interacted with are either jaded or bitter. Many are VERY nast to the host country nationals.
Some are not ............. but we are talking about the majority.
I should add that many are religously conceited.

Cant argue with you there I guess. I have heard of instances where the missionaries do more bad than good. Why they cant get along with other ppl is beyond me. But its nice to know that at least SOME of them actually help (I say that because I know of someone who has done such work and the enjoy what they do and who they meet.)

Nothing speaks more, IMHO, then finding out what others are reading.
Interesting thread.
I read just about anything on the NY Times Bestseller list.
Love anything Political, Analytical, or Historical. All the "Cals"
I'm a NON-FICTION fan, but loved Fiction when I was younger.
I used to fly a lot for a living. Read more then. Now I mostly drive to my locations, and books on tape don't work for me.

The Poisonwood Bible is as amazing book. One I have read more than once (both before and after becoming a mother, I found it did change the experience. Those who have read it will understand. )
It touches on more themes than just missionaries and religion. It speaks about racism, greed and the relationships between men and women.
