View Full Version : Modern society

I'm really starting to get pissed off at modern society in general. Back in high school, I despised anybody in the "in" crowd for being so conformist. Then I started getting annoyed at people who make a point to be non-conformists. But then I realized how stupid it is that people define themselves by how they dress or what kind of crap they buy.
And then there is the media. It feels like the quality of movies, music, and video games being released lately has taken a nose dive. A friend of mine says it's just my perception of today media, but I totally disagree. With very few exceptions, Nearly every video game I have played in the last 2 years has failed to entertain me at all. Same goes for music; modern pop music sounds like shit when compared to pop music a decade or 2 ago. Movies aren't as bad, but I still only see one or two really good movies a year.
Then there is the extreme consumerism in this country. It made me really angry when I heard about the guy who got trampled at Wal Mart on Black Friday. It was even worse to hear that people were still trying to get in even after they heard about a guy being dead inside. The quality of the shit we buy is getting worse too. Most stuff is designed to either fall apart or be obsolete a year after it comes out.
Then there is the issue of religion. I consider myself christian, but I have a serious problem with churches here in America. Most run themselves like corporations, and the ones that don't are exclusive, self-righteous, legalistic cults. I recently quit going to a church that didn't have the problems other churches have; It just has different ones.
The education system is pretty messed up. High School in no way prepared me properly for college. It had nothing to do with funding; we had plenty of it. The teachers didn't hold us very accountable; we basically screwed off the whole time. Half the the classes you take Freshman year of college should have been out of the way by the end of high school.
At college free speech is a joke. If your view doesn't line up with the overwhelmingly liberal views of the faculty and students, you don't really have the choice to express them publicly (even unoffensive ones). For example, anything pro-choice goes, but trying to promote pro-life gets you nothing but trouble. I don't have an opinion on that issue, but it bothers me that freedom of speech is suppressed.
Other than that I dislike the idea that the most viable career path in life is to go to college, and get a "good" job and spend the rest of my life sitting behind a desk paying off debt. I would do something about it, but I already have $30,000 in student loans.
Living in America isn't all that shitty; it could be worse. There are just a lot of things I wish I could change.

I made a thread pretty much like this in the past, but it's good to see someone who agrees...everyone is mindless today, and everything is going down the ass...The Force Unleashed was a good game though

Agree.
And then there is the media. It feels like the quality of movies, music, and video games being released lately has taken a nose dive. Really? Old movies were just as crap as the ones nowadays (or worse). It's just that we only watch the classics from the past, not the shit ones. Put on a rubbish channel which only shows old movies and you'll see what I mean.
Have you considered the fact that video games failing to entertain you is because you're growing older? Really look at the games, in my opinion they definately are getting better.
Music, well tastes change, there's also theissue again of only remembering the good ones.
I just wish when a new rihanna song it wasn't being played 6 times an hour on practically every station.

Consumerism is a state of mind. And can go overboard.
People get trampled at concerts too, and black friday seems to be just as much the 'tradition' of the rush as actually getting bargains. Shit happens.
Quality is not getting worse. Well at least not over the last 40 years. Pre WW1 I would say when the 'quality' of goods reached a peak in that they were made to last. But the quality of things in general is improving I would say.
Then there is the issue of religion. I consider myself christian, but I have a serious problem with churches here in America. Most run themselves like corporations, and the ones that don't are exclusive, self-righteous, legalistic cults. Hardly a new problem is it? Some self righteous churches?

Can't comment. Would vary from school to school. Anddidn't do american syllabus.

Well if the majority disagrees with you, you can expect the majority to let you know.

Life is what you make it. Doesn't sound appealing but you might yet end up doing something else.

Wise words, Carrot.
I've been so UP in my life, nothing could go wrong. Everything I touched turned to gold.
And I've been so DOWN in my life nothing could go right. Everything I touched turned to shit.
One fact that I always noticed is that things change, up, down and up again.
And the HARDER I worked the LUCKIER I got! ;)

I'm doing a mechanical engineering degree at the moment.
But sometimes I almost feel cheated.
My sister for example was never that good at school, ended up doing hospitality management and gets the opportunity to work at FANTASTIC locations doing things she truely enjoys and is good at.
God knows I'm happy for her, but my reward for being more academic is a more difficult degree doing something I'm good at but may not neccesarily enjoy?
One thought of mine was to become a camera man for a while (since I'm pretty sure I don't have the on screen personality) for one of these documentary type shows that will send you to amazing locations and pay you.
Which is why I said what I said, many people don't end up going into anyting related to what their degree was, I might, but now I realise I'm not limited to it.

Opportunities abound in Media, Food, Health Care (although this may mean you will be working for the Government soon), and low cost entertainment.
During a HARD recession people escape into television, movies, inexpensive food (Candy does VERY well during a recession) and other quick low cost feel good things do very well.
Good idea to be a cameraman. Call "Girls Gone Wild" and see if they are hiring...
Speaking of which, I have a friend whom is in the PORN industry. She does VERY well. VERY well. Solid Six Figure Income.
Maybe I'll try that! :D

Why not, Zapper?
Why not, indeed? :D
Besides... "OH BALLZACK! OH GOD, BALLZACK! DON'T STOP!" would sound good on the big screen!
Wait, I'm showing my age...
It would also sound good on DVD...
