After my enlistment is over I was thinking about maybe trying the college thing. Thing is I've been outta HS for a while and don't think I could just jump right into all that hard shit right quick. Do they have college courses for dumbies at some what decent Universities?

You live in Alaska? I have always wanted to visit. One thing that has had me wondering for some time...
Is it true that there are more men than women in Alaska ...AND... What is the gay community like there.
Thanks for your time

I am not sure what you mean by "sausage fest"... I am thinking one of two things:
1) There are a lot of men here.
2) There are a lot of men here and they have gay sex
Why are the single chicks obese? Are the single men obese as well?
I have also heard that alcoholism increases as you get closer to the poles. Is that true from your experience in Alaska?

The alcoholism and obese things are probably true because of the climate. It's obviously colder the closer you get to the poles, and people will generally find easy ways to avoid that discomfort. Alcohol has always been said to keep you warm, (at least make you think you're staying warm), and fatter people are generally warmer overall because of the extra insulation.

Sausage fest?!?!?! Can't believe you don't know that one. Any hoot, ithere is a shit load of guys up here. Nah, most of the guys are with in a normal looking weight. The chicks, holy freakin cow, no pun intended. I guess they figure there isn't anything to do but eat. I don't think the poles have anything to do w/ consumtion of alcohol. But during the winter very little sun, kinda makes me afraid to drink (I quite drinking last winter cuz it's just too depressing). The natives (native american indian type folks) tend to be more prone to alcoholism, I think it has to do w/ their refusal to accept new american culture, so they feel the are being oppressed.

Sausage ...oppressed.
Thanks for the "window to you world". I am facinated.
Could you please answer the following?
1) Why did you choose to move there?
2) What is daily life like in the the summer -vs- the winter?
3) Are the people conservative or liberal?
4) What wildlife have you seen? (polar bears, caribou, whales?)
5) How long would you live there?
6) What are the Inuit people like?
I am so gratefull for your time! You are the second person that I ahve met from Alaska.

I chose to move here cuz the USCG told me to.
Summer is full of cannery workers, a couple of non-rainy days (southeast alaska rains like a fucking ass hole shits, every fucking day unless yer irregular) Cannery workers smell like something freaking awfull. Winter it snows about 3 feet a day, then you plow get rid of it, it rains, no more snow on the road, then a day later you get 3 feet of snow...repeat as often as neccisary. Summer 5hrs of darkness, can you say I can't freaking sleep.
Winter 5hrs of light, can you say depressing. Now other parts of AK they get no light in the winter and no dark in the summer, I'm in the southeast where you get a little of both in the winter and summer, lucky me.
The people, I would have to say are conservitive, at least they really don't like gay folks.. but like liberals they tend to be very friendly folks.
I have seen brown, black bears, moose, porcupines, Sitka black tailed tear, Humpback whales, Orcas, Samon, halibut, (I've only seen 1 grizzly but I had to head north to do it), Seals, Bald Eagles (Big god damn birds), Shit load more I can't think of.
I'm stationed here until the summer of 07
Lived here about a year and 4 months
No inuits, it's tlinkit or something like that, ummm not to be rude, but sorta inbreed. The repopulate through their own kind. I'm gonna leave it at that.
Technically I'm not from AK, I'm just stationed here, and let me tell you what, I can't wait to get back to the real "USA", I need my fucking god damn wallmart and mcdonalds. I'm on an isolated island, and it's a beautiful view, but being from NJ originally, I need some pampering.

I chose to move here ..... pampering.
No doubt you need some pampering. It sounds so wet and cold.
It sounds like you have been able to see a lot of the wildlife (I am envious). This has been due to your position with the coast guard? I have always wanted to go and see orca in the wild. I will be taking my mother on a cruise to Alaska but I am sure that wont bring me close to understanding how life is there.
I am sad to hear that it is not the frozen paradise that I thought that it was. I am also sad to hear that gay people are not liked - but at least people are kind to each other.
I appreciate you serving your country and giving me this information.
Kind Regards - Buzz
