In case some haven't noticed, there's a program called "Wubi" which installs Ubuntu Linux just as any Windows application.

You'll need at least 5GB disk space, and 256MB RAM.
Give Wubi a username and password, hit install, and it downloads the derivative of your choice. Ubuntu for the norm, KDE with those who like slightly slower, but more Windows-like enviornments, XFCE, for the minimalistic type, and Mythbuntu, which is sort of a TV thing.
During install, it will download the entire Ubuntu operating system in a disk image, and create a virtual partition as a folder in Windows. After reboot, it will finish installing Ubuntu, as a secondary operating system, and reboot again, this time to start Ubuntu.
If you're curious or kind of on the edge, or you just don't want to risk screwing up your Windows install because you don't know what the hell you're doing, Wubi is great for you.
