Do you really want to make a difference in the life of others?
How about helping someone treat their baby's diarrhea & dehydration so it can live? What about educating someone on how to prevent HIV transmission so they don't get it? How about giving a woman iodine to help with her goiter? Why don't you help someone understand that AIDS cannot be spread only the virus that causes it? Could you put a steroid creme on someones shingles? Can you show someone how to use a condom? Could you treat a cut or burn? How about giving some fanzidar to a child that needs it? What about tell someone to remove a 3 day old turnicate off a harmless snake bite before they loose a limb?
Then do it. Join a group doing "developmental" work in Africa, bring your first AID kit and skip the fucking safari! Skip the touring, dining in the capital and other self-congratulatory bullshit too. If you have basic skills in first aid you can make a difference!
Here are two other options:
Peace Corps (www.peacecorps.gov)
Operation Crossroads Africa (http://operationcrossroadsafrica.org/main.php)
It will make you happy & a better person.

Hey septem,
Not all Africans can afford a condom coz quite a percentage of them earn less than a dollar a day,and for those supporting families it's quite a nightmare.
Another problem plauging them is mass corruption i.e most countries whence given free medicine & contraceptives, they do'nt reach the intended targeted people who are in need.THEY usually end up in drug stores retailling at exhorbitant prices under the pretext that they are imported.on & on & on
SO STOP BEING NEGATIVE & OPEN YOUR MIND.THIS WORLD IS FULL OF ERRORS.

I forget which country it was but promoting abstainence was surprisingly effective. Of course that may seem to some like too high a price to pay in exchange for not dying of a horrible disease.

The ignorance on how to use them is rampant and there is opposition to them from religion.
HIV was introduced to humans in Africa from Koprowski's polio vaccine. The epicenter of a disease always holds the most infected members.

What country? I have NEVER heard of that. All the countries that have had success have had extensive education programs that heavily relied on condoms. Uganda has dramatically decreased their HIV infection rate using such programs. The same is true of many southeast Asian countries.

Get real! Uganda DOES NOT rely on abstinence. I was in Kampala in October & November of 2000 and their program then and now relies on the use of condoms and MASS EDUCATION programs. I was there then and I have friends there now. They all are spreading the word and handing out free condoms. This is CRAZY!
THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I HATE RELIGION! They are blatantly lying about this. LYING ASSHOLES. STUPID STUPID STUPID!

Proof please to your claim of "HIV was introduced to humans in Africa from Koprowski's polio vaccine."
The location coincides dramatically. The earliest known cases of AIDS occurred in central Africa, in the same regions where Koprowski's polio vaccine was given to over a million people in 1957-1960.
The timing coincides. There is no documented case of HIV infection or AIDS before 1959. Centuries of the slave trade and European exploitation of Africa exposed Africans and others to all other diseases then known; it is implausible that HIV could have been present and spreading in Africa without being recognised.
Polio vaccines are grown (cultured) on monkey kidneys which could have been contaminated by SIVs. Polio vaccines could not be screened for SIV contamination before 1985.
Another monkey virus, SV-40, is known to have been passed to humans through polio vaccines. A specific pool of Koprowski's vaccine was later shown to have been contaminated by an unknown virus.
In order for a virus to infect a different species, it is helpful to reduce the resistance of the new host's immune system. Koprowski's polio vaccine was given to many children less than one month old, before their immune systems were fully developed. Indeed, in one trial, infants were given 15 times the standard dose in order to ensure effective immunisation.

I am heavily involved in HIV-AIDS education, prevention and care. I have many friends in Africa because I have lived there for over 3 years (cumulatively different countries). I still keep in contact with my colleagues in Ghana, Kenya, & Malawi. I have grassroots knowledge of how programs work.
Your catholic church has a history of making wine from water to suit their purposes. Some in the church also love to take credit for things they did not really do.

Education more than anything prevents AIDS. The saying: knowledge is power does hold true. Condoms by themselves are not going to solve the AIDS crisis. Pass out all you want but without the knowledge (I'm talking about more than just how to use it) to prevent AIDS and to care for the ones who have already contracted it condoms mean nothing. It's good that you are trying to help the best you know how to i applaud you for that but what good does passing out a handful of condoms do if noone is there to give more when the first run out? I had family ,an aunt and uncle, that spent 10 years in Africa trying to help they will tell you the same thing.

That doesn't answer my question.
Therefore; that leads me to believe that you don't understand epidemiology.
The virus was introduced into Africa by experiments with the polio vaccine and human trials circa 1950's. Africans maintain their lifestyle (unprotected sex and multiple sex partners) as normal. The virus spreads from its point of introduction. Humans promote the spread with emigration and immigration however the geographical source of infection shows the greatest number of infected persons. The disease is identified and the causality of infection is determined in the mid 1980's. The pandemic (by this point) has its concentration point at the epicenter (Africa). Therefore the reason that Africa has more cases of HIV-AIDS is because that it the origin of its crossover from Simian to Human. Twenty years is not enough time to impact the rate of infection given the infrastructure of African countries, education of the people and social barriers of the culture.
Thats it in a nutshell. Sorry this is not very indepth.

It's not lower than other African countries it is not increasing at the same rate as they are. If you compare Uganda to Niger, you would find more people infected with HIV in Uganda. If you compare Uganda to Democratic Republic of the Congo, you would find DRC has higher infection rates. The main cause of the difference is Museveni. He recognized the disease and he welcomed all help countries could offer combat the disease and ALL the forms of help they offered. More than likely promiscuity among the inhabitants has dropped a bit but they are also using prophylactics. The progressive way that Uganda has tackled the problem stands in stark comparison to the way other African countries dealt with it back in the 1990's. We are now seeing the effects of that choice.

What’s your point? Loss of promiscuity does not infer abstinence. It means that some men stopped banging lots of women but THE VAST majority now use condoms. I am not sure I could even state that promiscuity has dropped because condoms prevent the transmission of the disease and thats all we infer that there are high rates of proiscuity.

If you are in NY and in NYC you are probably seeing Rock Doves. If you are in suburban areas of NY you might be seeing mourning doves.
This is widespread mistake. I see that even Wikipedia even has it labeled "Rock Pigeon".
