SUV's...the #1 scapegoat

Well, besides Bush, naturally. There doesn't seem to be anything out there that can't be blamed on cell-phone-talking soccer-moms with AT tires and a 350 under the hood.

Try it:

- Global Warming? Easy... SUV's with their massive exhaust pipes
- everything that goes with global warming, like:
- Hurricane Katrina / Rita / Andrew? ... SUV's!
- high gas prices? ... SUV's mad gas consumption has raised demand
- the war in Iraq? ... that demand is killing soldiers
- feeling sick? come down with a fever? ... it must be air pollution!
- traffic congestion? ... SUV's are unwieldy and gargantuan
- losing baseball season? hot water heater broken? broke up with your girlfriend? wetting the bed? No problem; it's just those damn SUV's!

... and so on and so forth. The world would be so magical, warm, and fuzzy if we all drove Hondas, wouldn't it? I'm getting pretty damn sick of that acronym, too. What is an "SUV", really, but a pickup with a permanent camper shell?

Have you ever noticed that the news agencies love to point out the fact that an SUV was involved? I'll give you some examples:

"Man struck, killed by SUV on Southwest Side" (http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=local&id=3760998)

as opposed to:

"Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Passing Car" (http://www.nbc5.com/news/5677395/detail.html?rss=chi&psp=news)

Why does it matter?!? Is the fact that some poor pedestrian was killed by an Explorer instead of, say, a Prius really change anything? No, it doesn't. "Man struck, killed by car on Southwest Side" would have been just as informative.

I think "SUV's", aka "automobiles-with-an-actual-frame", are getting a bad rap. I'd love to hear your take on it. This place is in desperate need of some new threads, isn't it?

it is a fact that when you get hit by a suv as a pedestrian, your chance of severe injury or even death is far higher than when you get hit by a normal car.
Also, when you're in a car and you're hit by an suv, your chance of injury/death is higher.

so be safe in your suv! let other people get killed instead! it's their mistake they don't drive suv's when they're in an accident with you!

Not saying that I care at all for SUVs, but whoever supports this argument is just ignorant. There will always be a car that is the best at accomplishing these unwanted tasks. So what if the SUV is this? If it's obliterated from the earth than some other car will take its place, the common pickup truck will then be getting all the bad rap.

Still, if those bastards inside the SUVs care about maintaining some gas mileage then STAY OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE FREEWAY! If you're not passing anyone in the next 10 seconds then you're an idiot and need to get your ass out of my way!:eek:

dude, dont bust on all SUV's and big trucks, just the soccer moms.i drive a hemi ram that gets 10 MPG. but i use it for what it was intended for, arlready knowin about gas prices and its efficiency(which is why i also have a honda)

recently i was at a gas pump when this yuppie soccer mom was bitchin to me about gas prices, and when asked for my opinion, i told her we have no right to complain. when she asked why, i retorted with this(keep in mind shes drivin a ford excursion V-10 rollin in 33 inch tires mounted on her hubbies fav 22 inch rims) i asked
do you tow a huge trailer?
no.
do you do any forms of off roading?
no.
do you use your suv for any utility use whatsoever?
no
