A traveler once visited a small village and noticed amongst the tranquility of the residents a goose walking around with a wooden leg. The goose seemed to be well respected by the villagers, but his curosity overwhelmed him, so he asked a man nearby, "Why does the goose have a wooden leg?"

The man answered very affirmingly, "That goose is so valuable, that the other day when some children were in the street and a speeding car came by, the goose ran out after them and chased them out of the way, just in time to keep them from being hit!"

"Wow! that's great, but is that why the goose has a wooden leg?"

"Oh no, the week before that goose noticed someone's house was on fire and ran over and made loud honking noises, to wake them up. The family got out just in time."

"Is that why the goose has a wooden leg?"

"That goose is so valuable that everyday she lays an egg of pure gold. The town elders take it to the bank and the money received from the egg meets the needs of the entire village!"

"Wow! that's one valuable goose, but why does she have a wooden leg?"

The man looked down at the traveler and quietly told him, "You know, when a goose is that valuable, we just don't want to eat her all at one time."

This is, of course, a variation to the old parable of 'The Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs' that tells in metaphor a story of how many people wish to take a short cut to obtaining wealth and prosperity, thus ignorantly and unintentionally destroying it for everyone. This is the situation we now have in our Congress. The goose represents business and the economy, while the wooden leg represents the high tax, spend and irresponsible lending burdens that that have been placed upon us.

How will the goose that lays the golden eggs survive? How will our economy ever recover? Only time will tell. It always does.

I'm surprised that the goose even has a leg to stand on at this point.

It's crutches are missing and is now in a borrowed wheel chair. And somehow it's still able to shit out a golden egg when needed.

Maybe the goose has become a snake. It doesn't have a leg to stand on either.
