A California state senator who reportedly has voted against every gay rights measure since he took office eight years ago was charged with driving under the influence on Wednesday, reportedly after leaving a gay nightclub in Sacramento.
Sen. Roy Ashburn, a Republican from Bakersfield, was spotted driving erratically at about 2 a.m. Wednesday in downtown Sacramento, officials said. He was arrested after taking a sobriety test, and he was taken to Sacramento County Jail, where he was administered a blood-alcohol test prior to being booked and released.
He was charged with two misdemeanors: driving under the influence and driving with a blood alcohol level of .08 percent or higher.
Ashburn, a 55-year-old father of four, apologized for his actions.
"I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment," he said in a statement. "I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me -- my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate."
He was arrested after leaving Faces, a gay nightclub in midtown Sacramento, according to cbs13.com. A male passenger, who was not identified as a lawmaker, was also in the car but was not detained, the TV station reported.
A spokesman for Ashburn declined to comment to FoxNews.com regarding the nightclub allegations.
Ashburn, who served in the state Assembly from 1996 to 2002 before he was elected to the Senate, has voted against every gay rights measure since he became a senator, according to Project Vote Smart, a Web site that tracks voting records.

Typical. People that are publicly so anti gay like this guy and FreaKKK are almost always a closeted homosexual themselves.

But this DEMOCRAT was actually doing it.....
"Rep. Eric Massa (Dem New York) , who is married with two children, made unwanted advances toward a junior male staffer." And it looks like they're trying to cover it up. Fucking Dems.

So it is that you can't see the blatant hypocrisy, in a closeted gay man who takes every step he can to punish those who are open,or is it that because he is also a Rep. that you just can't admit it?
Yes what the schlub from Mass did is wrong, wrong because he broke promises (vows) he made to his wife, and possible misused his position- not wrong because he found a man attractive.
There is nothing wrong with Barney's sexuality - he is open with it and lying to no one.
The biggest issue with the guy from California was the amount of time he spent condemning and voting against gays while the whole time he was hiding the fact that he himself was the very thing he was against.

What a bunch of bullshit...he was "reportedly" seen leaving a gay club. And that from some tv reporter , almost all are liers anyway "A closeted gay man "? How the fuck do you know ?Were you there ?"Is it that because he is also a Rep."... I'm independent , in my view most politicians are assholes. And "hiding the fact that he himself was the very thing he was against" , did you think that up , jumping to conclusions ?

I think also , Paisley , is that you've failed to realize that this idiot from Calif is supposed to act for his constituents (that have voted AGAINST same sex marriage) and leave his PERSONAL agenda out of it.So if he is gay , it should have no bearing on what he votes for in the state house.

But Zap, this was on Fox news, this isn't you admitting that the fine folks at FOX would lie is it?
I am not just making assumptions the article clearly states he was arrested after leaving the club. Would you go drinking at a gay club and leave with a man at 2 in the morning?
While it is true that the "hicks in the sticks" are against gay marriage I have seen nothing that says they think that people who are gay should be treated like second class citizens. In fact I have seen LGBT groups and LGBT business directories for the area that really make it look like there is a decent size, active LGBT community there. So are the people he represents only those who voted for him , or everyone who lives in the area.
And BTW if he likes men and isn't being honest about it, he is a closeted gay man.

He was reportedly seen leaving the club by some "reporter" in Sacramento as Fox News posted. They were not the source. So your lame attempt to bash Fox is a failure. So you are making assumptions as he was arrested after being seen leaving a gay club.

Sacramento PD says nothing about his leaving any club. This whole deal is about smearing the guy...total slander and you know it.
It cracks me up that the MAJORITY of voters in Cal voted against Gay Marriage and you will label them as "hicks in the sticks". Don't get me wrong...I'm for gay marriage , but those voters aren't and they must be respected as well as anyone.

I was just going by the report I found on the FOX website. I figured they would have gotten it right (it is about a family focused republican) ( and that you would argue less if it came from your source of choice - you so often defend them and they wrote the line about him leaving the gay club)
the "hicks in the sticks" is a nickname for the folks of Bakersfield - where he is centered. And I am glad you are for gay marriage, it shows that you can be a fair person IMHO. But I ask the question again - are the LGBT folks in his district not his constituents? Should he not be thinking about them when he votes that they can be fired, or evicted or otherwise mistreated simply because they are gay? Yes the folks in his district are anti-gay marriage but like I said does that mean they don't want gay people treated fairly at all.
And also like the civil rights movement in the 1960's and Brown vs the Board of Ed; at what point is it the job of government to step in and protect those whose rights are being trampled because of the prejudice of a majority (of asshats) ? The folks in Mississippi didn't want their schools desegregated but it was the right thing to do, not letting good people be refused jobs and housing because they happen to be gay is the right thing to do.

That is absolutely correct; "supposed to act for his constituents," though so few actually do. And, I am very proud that California stood up for what was right and voted down so-called "same sex marriage.' RIGHT ON CALIFORNIA!!

Let's see the current population of California is 38,292,687. According to most sources the average number of gays in the population is 1 in 10. I am not going to try and figure out if San Francisco skews the figure; so lets just go with the 1 in 10. So that means 10% or almost 40,000 people are gay, but they don't count to you. Shouldn't they be considered as constituents to the states elected officials? Shouldn't the voices of one tenth of the state be heard?

Well put Haw, especially since in this case it requires nothing of the majority - no buses, no change in funding - just allowing the minority the same legal protections as anyone else.

No problem with hearing them, just as long as the remaining 90% keep gays out of our society by passing anti-gay laws. That is called democracy; i.e., when 90% make the laws and are not forced into perverted laws forced through by a loud mouth 10%.

But it was nowhere near 90%
the final numbers were 52.3% yes to 47.7% no with some counties coming in at over 70% no.county by county map here (http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/sov/2008_general/maps/returns/props/prop-8.htm)
It may have been a majority but only about 5% more people wanted same sex marriage banned that those who voted against the hateful idea.
You are so WRONG, WRONG, WRONG
not only about the numbers (90% my foot) but the very idea that people were voting to exclude the LGBT community from their society. If you put that shit to a vote you would find your side very lonely. There are even members of the clergy who wouldn't stand with you on that one. Didn't Christ say love thy neighbor? That's right your "faith" is nothing more that the result of a search for something to justify your bigotry and hatred of everyone but you. You choose to ignore the parts that would crimp your style , but shout to the heavens about those that support your twisted world view. You spew about Leviticus and what it says about gays at the same time you post pics of going to a seafood restaurant - there is a word for that.....hypocrisy.

What the fuck you goddamn nazi? Seriously you are to gays as goddamn nazis are to jews. Get the fuck over yourself. There is no goddamn gay agenda to make the whole planet gay.
And perverted laws? Giving all citizens the same rights as you is perverted? You conceited asshole. Just because you don't like the color of someone's skin...err...someone's religion...er..........their lifestyle....doesn't give you the right to drag their asses through the dirt. Go fuck yourself.
Besides, if I'm standing up for the gays, that means you must either be sitting down for the gays, or bending over for the gays. That is, if you follow the logic of pro-choice=pro-death.
That's all I've got to say. End
