Super Multi Blue to the rescue?

A day full of press conferences, meetings and ending with Bill Gates' keynote speech began with LG giving people the first look at its much-hyped, high definition DVD player that can play both HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs.

I'm not sure what to make of it really. Things like this usually tend to bring format wars to a stalemate. But I guess if every drive could play both then it wouldn't be that big a deal except to make it more confusing. :D

Will this player have the bullshit DRM protection that the Blu-ray players have that causes the player to lock up if it thinks a disc is pirated?

Not sure about that, will have to look into it.

If both players can play both formats, in essence, that more or less creates a situation where there is really only "one format." Who cares which one you buy or use? There would be little difference and little point in giving a damn which one you prefer. :D

True, but DVD-RWs are randomly rewritable whereas the +RWs are not, or the other way around. I forget. :D

Other than that, though, you're right, it's better this way because if neither format wins out, neither becomes obsolete.

I just wonder if, now that they're in this optical disc phase, if they'll ever make formats differently sized so that it's easier to tell what kind of disc it is.

I think they will both need to label their dics' with big cool looking logos so we'll know the difference! :D Otherwise, I'll buy one thinking I was buying the other!
