My son has a project to make a working lava lamp for school its 80% of his grade. We settled on what google calls a poor mans lava lamp. It sounds pretty basic but finding the stuff to make it with is a pain in the butt. It takes mineral oil ( you can find it in some pharmacy's) 70%rubbing alcohol and 91% rubbing alcohol ( which turns out you have to get a pharmacy to order) and then there is food dye.. Today i sent my kids to the first store for food dye and they came home with the response *huh* you can dye food* the second store was Latino and thought they were asking for change for a ten ( makes note to ask Mr Birdy if food dye is Spanish for give me change for this money) and the Koren store offered my kids some kind of foot powder. I had to laugh when three different stores don't have any idea what in the hell food dye is hopefully after work ill be able to hunt some down some where.

I have a different type of lava lamp that involves nitroglycerin and plastic explosive. Just drop it on a mountain and run, and bam. Instant lava. :D
I didn't think those items would be all that hard to find. Did you check Wegmans or some other grocery store for the food dye?

For Who its not a measurement of 91% and 70% its the type of alcohol that is supposed to be used.
I made the damn thing and had the mineral oil doing its whole looking like a bubble thing sat it on my mantel so the kid could take it to school tomorrow when all the sudden BAM the damn thing exploded into about a million pieces all i can figure is that some how it built up some kind of pressure or fumes or something so long story short i am writing a letter to the teacher telling her to forget it hes not doing the project if it may blow up ( and i followed the directions to the damn tee gotta love these school projects nowadays I just wish they would go back to the pop cycle sticks and glue

To me a poor mans lava lamp only involves me, my hand, and my penis.
