At 10 PM on Friday, February 19,1981 "Zeta 7" changed from it's rock roots for easy listening. The disc jockeys cried, and loyal listeners turned their Zeta 7 license plates upside down in protest. That was the day WORJ became WJYO for the "Joy of Orlando". WORJ would move from rock to the sounds of Barbara Streisand, Neil Diamond, etc.
On his last morning show Thom Robinson asked listeners to memorialize "Zeta7" by turning their license plates upside down on their cars. Program director, David Sousa, recalls "Zeta 7"'s last hours. "It was probably the most terrible day of my life. That was my radio station ...my flesh and blood. It was my child and it had to be shot. We had one bad rating book and management pulled the plug on "Zeta 7".

I never flew those colors Cabo but I had many friends who did. And yes, they all turned it upside down except one. As best I know, he is the only one with that tag as it is in his entertainment room.
It was a sad day when they went bye-bye.

Boy that was popular, LOL. Then it came back as an Oldies Rock station in 99 under the WSHE and WEBG call letters till 2005 when it finally, totally ended and became Rumba 100.3.
I had some fun times there with some of the guys. I was a guest DJ one Sunday night and loved it. It is totally amazing at that time and I bet still today how much work really is involved. You don't flip the mike on and talk and just play music. It's a lot of work to do it right. The DJ's and producers have to be sharp, well the producer does. LOL Seems in the booth back then it could get a little crazy. :D
Larry the Cable Guy used to be a DJ there. "Git 'er done" was there before the Cable Guy copyrighted it.
Here is some links with a lot of their history.

Note how Mike Lyons was tied to both and 96.5 WHTQ which still exists. RIP Mike, thanks for the party at DIZ.
Mike Lyons 10-8-09
Michael G. Lyons, age 57 of Orlando, FL, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2009. He began his career in Orlando in 1971 writing for the city's first underground newspaper "The Watcher". He was Music Director and announcer for WORJ-FM 107.7, WDIZ-FM 100.3 and WHTQ-FM 96.5 in Orlando, Program Director for 98 Rock (WXTB) in Tampa and spent the last 8 years of his radio career as Mornings/Assistant Program Director in Miami. Mike joined TripleARadio.com as columnist of The Forest and contributing editor from 2001 - Present. (Other content removed out of respect for the family)
WORJ and WDIZ are part of Central Florida history as far as radio stations go. They were the best two, period.

RCA Broadcast News, February 1957:
"WGTO is located in the center of a group of metropolitan areas as contrasted to the more usual establishment of a station in a principal city of its own. Its coverage, on 540 kc, encompasses such major cities as Gainesville, Daytona Beach, Orlando, Lakeland, Tampa, Clearwater and St. Petersburg. This area, covering the more populous sections of Central Florida, extends from Gainesville to Okeechobee and from Gulf to Ocean hence the call letters WGTO.

I didn't know they were in Haines City at first. But sure do remember them. Who that lived here, especially pre-FM popularity here doesn't.
But my favorite AM station back then was WQAM in Miami.
The station is famous for its days in the 1960s, under ownership of Storz Broadcasting, when it presented a Top Forty format and competed vigorously with rival WFUN (at 790 AM). These were the WQAM "glory years." In 1964, WQAM promoted the Beatles heavily prior to their second appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, which took place in Miami Beach. http://www.560.com/beatles.htm
Mom had one of these on her car and I had one on my dresser in my room. http://www.560.com/WQAM-1971-Logo-650x152.jpg
