So there's been all this controversy between doctors and others about whether low-carb diets are healthy or not... Traditionally, doctors agree that the best healthy weight-loss program is the opposite: Low fat, and High Carbs.
So I gave the traditional diet a shot for a couple months. I lost maybe ten pounds in there, sneaked in a little fat from time to time, gained it back, lost five, etc... I had to go to the Dr. to renew a prescription and he took blood work... turned out the traditional low-fat, high-carb diet messed me up BAD! Cholesterol wasn't too bad, but my triglycerides were through the damn roof! When I told the nurse that called w/results what I had been eating (cereal, soup, etc.) she said that was really, REALLY bad for triglycerides. Need to scale the carbs back.
So I was going to do Atkins, but my fiancee and I ended up giving the SBD a try, and DAMN! I lost 27 pounds in ONE month. And with the reduction in carbs (esp. sugars) I would bet my blood work would come back better. I wonder why Doctors warn against this kind of diet plan? It appears to be working on a grand scale in my case!

Just because it works doesn't mean it's healthy. A lot of theese kinds of diets make people loose weight, but might have a high risk to get cancer.

Actually, replacing sugar with fiber should be better at protecting against cancer... Too much red meat can cause colon cancer, but the one I tried emphasizes on poultry and fish... Surely there could be nothing but positive results from losing weight, adding fiber & protein, and cutting out sugar and fried foods...

Thanks bud, I never really gave a rat's ass about watching what I ate until the Dr. gave me the 400+ tryglyceride read... Had to cut the carbs to reverse 'em. Glad your wife's doing well too.

don't feel alone, man...i've always had an extremely quick metabolism, able to eat mounds of food without a second thought...now, at the age of 40, i get nervous about going to the dr.s', and as for the 6-pack i used to sport, it seems to have converted to a pony-keg:D

Same happening to me now, but at 26. And yeah, blame the beer, that's what I did! If I stacked all the Miller Lite's I ever drank on top of each other they would reach the moon! I'm surprised I don't weigh 300 pounds because of it!

I'm a poor piece of crap. Miller seems pricey to me. Lucky the liquor store sells 12-16oz packs for $9.99 here, otherwise I'd end up drinking Milwaukee's Worst. But since I gotta cut my carbs now, I drink rum instead... I'm targetting 200, I've gone from 250 to 220 so far.

Want a great way to get skinny without lifting a finger? Watch the movie "Se7en". You'll see what I mean about halfway through. :D

That movie was extremely freaky and disturbing. But it was a good movie to see once, if you're into the kind of movies I'm into. :D

The best diet is not being fat to begin with. This way you already eat in moderation.

Just don't even worry 'bout it. Not till the "Gout" sets in....then you will see life in a whole new way. Usually starts around mid 40's. Good Luck and enjoy what you can while you can.:p

Hate to drag an old skeleton out of the closet again, but for all the doctors and scientists with their credentials and fancy expensive degrees who say that low-carb isn't a healthy diet, I have news for you:
Total cholesterol should be between 100-199
Triglycerides should be between 0-149
LDL should be between 0-99
HDL should be between 40-59
BEFORE MY LOW-CARB DIET (January):
Weight: 246
Cholesterol: 248
Triglycerides: 435
(LDL and HDL cannot be tested once triglycerides are over 400)
AFTER MY LOW-CARB DIET (Tested Tuesday):
Weight: 204
Cholesterol: 157
Triglycerides: 130
LDL: 96
HDL: 45
Yeah, take that medical science! Let's see you digest those figures without choking... I am a healthy motherfucker again and I owe it all to ME! HAHAHAHAHA!

Nice one, Jim. Glad to hear you're doing better. I'm like a young hitek, I guess -- extremely fast metabolism. I pretty much eat whatever I want and never regret it. It'll catch up to me one day, but I'm too young and naive to care. (Though by saying that, it proves that I'm not.)
Replying to GS, "Se7en" was a good movie. It didn't freak me out at all, but movies almost never do. People with weak constitutions should avoid it, but I really enjoyed the story. Good story telling makes up for any amount of violence, gore or disturbing things in my book. Speaking of which, "Sin City" is one of my favorite movies. So is "Hot Fuzz" (DVD July 31!).

My metabolism has been pretty sweet most of my life. When I graduated high school I weighed just under 150 lbs. I don't think it started slowing until about 3 years ago...

That's pretty much what I expect mine to do. I don't plan on caring about my diet until then, though.

Yeah, it's a real bitch trying to keep it up, but all good things must come to an end eventually...

I guess it's easier to keep it off than it is to get it off. And by get it off I mean lose weight.
Have you ever heard of High Intensity Interval Training?

High Intensity Interval Training?
Nope. Asplain.

Nope. Asplain.
Basically it means taking any cardiovascular exercise, such as walking or cycling, and alternating between high intensity and low intensity. For instance, you'd alternate every thirty seconds between sprinting and jogging, or jogging and walking. Basically you want to go pretty much all-out for a set time and then recover with a lower intensity for a set time.
This not only burns fat very effectively, but you'll keep burning fat even after you're finished. Altogether you only do this for about fifteen minutes, plus a couple minutes for warm-up and cool down.

Ah, that stuff.. yeah I remember the routines, just not by name. Combined with a diet regimen it may be so effective that if I were to try it, I might get so skinny the wind could blow me away :D
